Kakegawa Tea Estate got famous for its deep steamed green tea so-called “Fukamushi Sencha” due to “Kakegawa study”. This “Kakegawa study” revealed and widely announced varous health benefits of deep steamed green tea based on the scientific evidences. Now, we can see the Kanji characters meaning “Kakegawa tea” on the most of tea shops.
Kakegawa tea estate is also famous for Chgagusaba practice which has been certified as GIAHS by FAO. Chagusaba practice, the traditional tea-grass integrated system in Shizuoka, is the soil management by inputting silver grasses cut on the area around tea plantation. This management of tea plantation and surrounding area has contributed to the biodiversity in the tea estate.
On the end of Autumn, we can see many bundles of silver grass around tea plantations, which are cut and bundled by tea farmers.
And then, tea farmers put the silver grasses onto the soil between lows of tea plants.
This traditional input of silver grasses has been practiced for long time, resulting in rich biodiversity and environmental harmony.
