Tea Café “Maruyo” – A Stylish Café of Specialty Local Teas and Foods

A local tea merchant “Maruyo Akahori Shoten” has opened its own tea café “Maruyo” on the south region of Makinohara upland. The tea café “Maruyo” offers some specialty teas produced on Makinohara upland and specialty local foods.

This café puts a great significance on the local specialty products, such as ‘Tsuyuhikari’ tea cultivar, Enshu beef, specialty salt harvested from the sea of Enshu, dried salty plum so-called Umeboshi produced by local farmers, boiled small sardines so-called “Shirasu” fished from the sea of Enshu. These local products are used for each menu in the café.

Various confections. The left one on upper array: A set of 3 tea confections, terrine of ‘Tsuyuhikari’ cultivar or Hojicha rosted tea, Warabimochi and chou a la tea cream. Varieties of Omusubi filled with various foods. Local specialty fillings are recommended such as fried Enshu beef and dried salty plum so-called “Umeboshi”.

Various “Ochazuke”, the rice and toppings soaked with tea. There are 3 kinds of toppings, baked eel, Umeboshi and dried salty small sardines and baked salmon. We can choose Genmaicha blend tea and deep steamed Sencha of ‘Tsuyuhikari’ cultivar.

The café welcomes us with a cup of ‘Tsuyuhikari’ Sencha, which has bright green infusion and mellowness!

The menu is full of local specialty products, of course including specialty teas produced on Makinohara upland. ‘Tsuyuhikari’ tea is used for confections such as terrine and pudding. The Tsuyuhikari pudding and colorful parfaits containing Tsuyuhikari terrine are the best recommended confections!

When visiting by some friends, we can share these confections with each other. A set of three kinds of tea confections is also recommended for sharing.

Loving specialty teas as we do, the best thing of all, a cup of the best Sencha “Yukari” is so tasty!

We can observe the dance of loose leaves under steeping in Kyusu tea pot. The tin shape of leaves indicates the youngness of ingredient tea shoots.

 

We can be delighted with the duality of mellowness and freshness.

In addition to these specialty products, the tea café Maruyo provides us with experience of tea blending. There is a room for visitors’ experience of tea blending at the inner side of the café.

We can enjoy preparing loose leaf tea by blending various kinds of tea based on the advices of the staff. On the lid of each tea box, the descriptions tell us their features, for example, light steamed tea can raise the aroma, deep steamed tea can enrich the body and taste, Kabusecha – Sencha of shade grown tea can deepen the green color of infusion, etc.

On the left side of the entrance, we can enjoy looking potteries shown on the shelves.

The Maruyo is one of the most stylish tea cafes and offers specialty local tea and foods with sophisticated hospitality. When driving on Makinohara upland, it is recommended to drop in the tea café Maruyo.

Of course, each loose leaf tea is sold in the cafe.
