Yamadaen – Long Established Tea Shop near Mishima Taisha Grand Shrine

Yamadaen is a long-established tea shop in Mishima city, which has been established for more than 100 years since the end of Edo period.

This traditional tea shop has been refined ingredient crude tea of ‘Yabukita’ cultivar brought from mainly tea estates in higher altitude along big river such as Kawane and Honyama. These mountainside tea estates traditionally produce light steamed green tea so-called “Asamushi Sencha”, which has tin-shape and rich aroma.

The appearance of loose leaf tea refined by Yamadaen expresses the features of mountain-nurtured tea, needle like shape and duality of spicy and mellow aroma.

Yamadaen displays loose leaf teas of various grades and types as follow.

We can buy these specialty teas within unique tea cans in which the famous Ukiyoe “Mishimajuku” drawn by Utagawa Hiroshige is illustrated.

When I visited Yamadaen, the staff welcomed me with a cup of Sencha green tea.

She brewed the tea there, I touched her “Omotenashi” hospitality.

In addition to loose leaf tea, we can buy tea wares and original tea sweets.

Pleasingly Yamadaen sells loose leaf tea by measure.

Each grade of loose leaf tea are stocked in the wood box so-called “Chabako”. The staff of Yamadaen sells these teas by measure.

So we can buy small portions of the specialty tea. I bought four grades of Sencha green tea, including two first flush in 2018.

I could enjoy fresh green fragrance of first flush with first impact of light roasty and complex spice-like aroma and mellow flavor.

Mishima is a traditional city which has developed as a hub among Tokyo metropolitan district, nature-blessed Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka city and foothills of Mt. Fuji and Hakone mountains. And Mishima city has “Mishima Taisha Grand Shrine”, one of the most famous shrines in Japan.
