In the spring session of the World Tea Festival 2019, visitors enjoyed sightseeing on Makinohara upland.
The festival provided a program “Chabatake Walking”, in which visitors enjoyed walking through tea plantation on Makinohara upland with sightseeing and tea experiences in each point.
This program has four spots for tea experiences as follows.
- The water tank for irrigation on Makinohara upland
- Tea hand-picking in Maruto Farm
- Observation of various tea cultivars in NARO
- Observation of water infrastructure for tea plantation on Makinohara upland
Each point provided interesting experiences.
(1) The water tank for irrigation on Makinohara upland
In this walking program, participants could go into the special place where we are prohibited to enter. The place is the rooftop of water tank for irrigation on Makinohara upland.
At first, participants walked through tea plantation to the tank.
The staff of “Makinohara Yosui”, the organization of water infrastructure on Makinohara upland, told the function and history of the tank and development of tea estate on Makinohara upland.
Then the staff guided participants to the rooftop of tank.
Fantastic views delighted the participants.
(2) Tea hand-picking in Maruto Farm
After the walking to the next point, Maruto Farm welcomed participants with tea experience of hand-picking.
The staff explained how to pick tea shoots.
Participants enjoyed tea plucking by their hand.
(3) Observation of various tea cultivars in NARO
In the spot of NARO, the chief researcher Dr. Araki guided the experimental tea farm in NARO and explained the differences among tea cultivars.
The obvious difference among tea varieties delighted participants.
(4) Observation of water infrastructure for tea plantation on Makinohara upland
At the last viewpoint, Makinohara Yosui led us show the other water infrastructure so-called “farm pond”, which was introduced in the past post.
We could see the water reserved in the big “pond” for irrigation to tea farms.
