“Fujieda Wakocha”, a local specialty black tea produced in Fujieda tea estate, had been launced by Mitsui Norin Co. Ltd. as a ready-to-drink.
Mitsui Norin Co. Ltd., which is a subsidiary of MITSUI & CO., LTD., developed this black tea drink by collaboration with local tea farmers in Fujieda tea estate. Some cultivars are used for the black tea drink, such as “Fujikaori” and “Benihikari”, which has higher aroma content.
Fujikaori – a cultivar bred by a tea farmer in Fujieda tea estate
Fujikaori was bred by a tea farmer in Fujieda tea estate. A part of the name “Fuji” is derived from the estate name, and “Kaori” is derived from its meaning “aromatic”. The cultivar was bred by crossing “Yabukita” with “Shizu Inzatsu 131” which is one of the Assam cultivars.
This cultivar expresses aromatic characteristic even after steaming, as mentioned by the French “Japanese Tea Instructor”. So the R.T.D. drink of Fujikaori green tea also had been launched, named as “Fujieda Kaori”.
Based on the explanation by Mitsui Norin, properties of Fujikaori cultivar are described as follows.
- Infusion color : Pale orange, which let us impress somehow blue accent.
- Astringency : Less than the cultivars generally used in India and Sri Lanka.
- Aroma : Flower-like aroma such as jasmine and violet.
- Aftertaste : Mellow finish like honey.
Benihikari – a mixture of 3 cultivars from India, Japan and China.
Benihikari is the mixture of cultivars from 3 countries, India, Japan and China. This cultivar bred by crossing one of Chinese cultivars with “Benikaori”, which was bred with one of native varieties in Kagoshima region and one of Assam cultivars.
Based on the explanation by Mitsui Norin, properties of Benihikari cultivar are described as follows.
- Infusion color : Bright orange, which let us impress somehow blue accent.
- Astringency : Light bodied and less astringent than the cultivars generally used in India and Sri Lanka.
- Aroma : Fresh aroma spread soon through our nose.
- Aftertaste : Clean finish similar to black teas produced in Sri Lanka.
“Fujieda Wakocha” has bright amber color and soft texture with mild aromatic finish.
The mild flavor and aroma would heal our mind. I’d like to drink this “Fujieda Wakocha” when I’m depressed or tired.
The soft texture would relaxes our body and the floral aroma would refreshes our mind!!
